USING YOUR COVERAGE
Booking with CDCP takes three steps
1
Tell us you're a CDCP member
Call or book online. Mentioning the plan up front lets us verify everything before you arrive.
2
Bring two things
Your CDCP member card and photo ID. That's the whole checklist.
3
We handle the rest
Coverage confirmed with Sun Life, the plan billed directly. You never pay first and claim later.
About co-pays: depending on your family income, the plan pays 100% (under $70K), 60% ($70–80K) or 40% ($80–90K) of its fees. You get your exact cost before treatment starts.

What CDCP covers at the dentist

The plan covers most of everyday dentistry. Here's what that means in practice, and we confirm your exact coverage before any treatment starts.

COVERED ROUTINELY
Everyday dentistry
Cleanings, scaling & fluoride
Exams & X-rays. Up to three exams a year
Fillings
Extractions, including many wisdom teeth
Root canal treatment
Gum (periodontal) care
Complete & partial dentures
WITH PREAUTHORIZATION
Plan approval first
Crowns, in certain situations
Extra gum-care visits beyond the yearly limit
Some complex or specialist treatments
Preauthorization means the plan approves before treatment starts. We prepare and submit that paperwork for you.

CDCP questions we hear every day

Three things: you're a Canadian resident for tax purposes who filed last year's tax return, your adjusted family net income is under $90,000, and you have no access to private dental insurance (through work, a pension or a spouse's plan). The plan is now open to all ages.
Yes. Cleanings, checkups and X-rays are covered services, and the plan allows up to three exams per year. Depending on your income tier there may be a co-pay; we confirm yours before your visit.
It depends on your family income. Under $70,000, the plan pays 100% of its fees and most visits cost you nothing. From $70,000–79,999 it pays 60%, and from $80,000–89,999 it pays 40%, with the rest due at your visit. We tell you your exact amount before treatment starts.
Not always, and clinics that pretend otherwise cause ugly surprises. The plan pays according to its own fee schedule, so a co-pay or a small fee difference can apply depending on your tier and the service. Our rule: you get the exact out-of-pocket number in writing before we start. No surprises at the desk.
Only at clinics that accept the plan, and we do, with direct billing to Sun Life, so you're not paying out of pocket and waiting to be paid back. Under CDCP rules, patients who pay the full cost themselves don't get reimbursed, which makes direct billing the only sensible way.
Through your My Service Canada Account, at canada.ca/dental, or by phone at 1-833-537-4342. Applying is free. Any call, text or letter asking you to pay to apply or renew is a scam. We can't submit the application for you, but once you're approved we handle everything on the dental side.
Yes. Coverage runs by benefit year and you reapply each spring to keep it. Your co-pay tier can change at renewal since it's based on your latest tax return. Worth double-checking before you book bigger treatment.
Purely cosmetic work like whitening and veneers isn't covered, and some services (certain crowns, for example) need preauthorization from the plan first. We check what applies to your case and handle the preauthorization paperwork for you.
Yes. Refugees and protected persons covered under the Interim Federal Health Program are welcome here, with the same direct billing and the same care.
Your CDCP member card, photo ID, and a list of any medications you take. That's it. We handle the rest, including confirming your coverage with Sun Life before your appointment.
